History of the Parish:
The Parish "San Esteban" in the Aguada neighbourhood of Montevideo started its work more than 10 years ago with a group of adolescents who, under the direction of Father Néver Araujo met in the home of the Diz family for Bible study and other activities.
From these activities an adult group began meeing on a Saturday afternoon and when the Rev. Graydon Harvey came as a missionary to work in the parish of St. Augustine, St. Stephen´s was put under his care.
Many years of missionary work were undertaken in the neighbourhood meeting in the home of the Diz family and developing a vision for the parish until in September 2002, the congregation moved its base to a nearby property aquired by the Diocese. In the same building as the new chapel, the parish opened the doors of a hostel to assist people living with HIV/AIDS who were living in poverty and had nowhere to live, a population that the congregation felt called to reach out to and work with.
The hostel offers the congregation the opportunity to practice "integrated mission" and to demonstrate God's love for everyone. The hostel functions in co-ordination with the SEIC a public body working with those suffering from infectious diseases. Leading this work are two Cuban missionaries - a Doctor and a nurse - and a missionary from the UK, a nurse, all of whom are supported by the UK mission organisation, United Society for the Propogation of the Gospel. The Parish Priest is Father Leonardo Goyret who is assisted bythe Rev-Deacon Martha López.
