Some years ago a student of our Theological Institute asked the Bishop for permission to do his practical pastoral work with his family and neighbours in la Villa Felicidad, a suburb of the the town of Progreso, in the region of Canelones, some 32km from Montevideo. In this way a new mission was started.
In 2003 land was purchased to construct a church building and the building itself was completed and commissioned for service in November 2004.
Our Community
A group of between 10 and 20 families form our small community; principally women, adolescents and children. All of us are from the local neighbourhood and are familiar with the problems that exist here. We aspire to be good neighbours and to assist with all the needs of the local community. We are a community that seeks to respond in the most straightforward way to the idea that in the poorest people that the face of God is to be found.

Family Vegetable Project

More than 60 local families participate in this project, which seeks to support the development of family vegetable gardens within the neighbourhood to improve the local diet. The project undertakes training, works together in groups, and makes tools and materials available for the local community. Cooking workshops are also undertaken using the vegetables that have been grown through the project with a view to increasing teh local knowledge of the most nutritious and economic forms of food preperation.
There are plans to develop both the vegetable growing and cooking workshops in the local school and with the local club for the elderly.
